Songs from the Heart

In the days before the temple was destroyed, the Jews made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem three times a year for the major festivals: Passover, Pentecost and the Feast of Tabernacles. As the people traveled, they would sing the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). As the Jewish people traveled to worship, they sang the songs of their hearts—songs about God's character and provision, cries for help, remembrance, restoration and, ultimately, redemption. This Lent, as we mark the days that lead to Easter, we'll study these ancient songs and learn how they oriented the Jews' hearts toward worship as we prepare ours to worship the Risen King, and the ultimate fulfillment of these songs. This reading plan begins on Monday, March 3, and ends on Easter Sunday, April 20.
