Traditional Apple Pie Recipe

We love apple pie, and this simple, traditional double crust recipe is sure to please!

Ingredients

Crust

  • 4 cups flour

  • 1/14 teaspoon salt

  • 1 1/2 cup shortening

  • 2/3 cups water

Filling

  • 4-5 medium apples, peeled and sliced (use Granny Smith, Jonagold or Fuji or a mixture)

  • 1 large egg yolk

  • 1 tablespoon of heavy cream

  • 1-2 tablespoons of butter

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar, plus a little more for sprinkling

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (or more if you love it)

  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

  • ⅛ teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425º.

  2. To make crust, combine 4 cups of flour and salt and mix well. Cut in shortening until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Add the 2/3 cups of water one tablespoon at a time, tossing and mixing lightly. Add water until dough is formed and is moist enough to form a ball. Divide the dough into two balls, cover and set aside. May be easier to handle if you place in the refrigerator or freezer for a few minutes before trying to roll it out and place in the bottom of the pie pan.

  3. Mix together egg yolk and heavy cream, set aside

  4. Mix together 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Toss apples in this mixture.

  5. Roll out dough and place in bottom of pie pan, top with apple mixture.

  6. Dot the apple mixture with 1-2 tablespoons of butter

  7. Roll out second ball of dough and top the pie pan, crimping the edges and cutting a few slits in the top. Sprinkle generously with remaining sugar and remaining butter.

  8. Bake until crust starts to brown, about 25 minutes.

  9. Lower oven temperature to 350º and bake another 25-30 minutes to juices are bubbling.

  10. Cool and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
