Summer 2023 Reading List: Being Present

Struggling to be present in the moment? Here are four books to help!

As the summer season approaches, we’re looking forward to sunshine, great grilling recipes, and, of course, some extra time to read! Over the next few months at The Bookery, we’re going to be focusing on the theme of “being present,” and we’ve got a reading list designed to help us understand that topic better.

So, here are a few of the books we’re hoping to check out this summer.

Present Over Perfect

Shauna Niequist

Shauna Niequist is an author we’ve come to love here at The Bookery, due to her beautiful writing style, love of good food and desire to live authentically. In Present Over Perfect, Niequist recounts her journey of learning a new way to live, breaking the chains of busyness and embracing stillness, rest and simplicity. The goal, she stresses, isn’t achieving some outward definition of perfection, but simply being present in the very real, day-to-day ordinariness of your life. Get your copy.

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World

John Mark Comer

“Corrie ten Boom once said that if the devil can’t make you sin, he’ll make you busy,” John Mark Comer writes in The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. “There’s truth in that. Both sin and busyness have the exact same effect—they cut off your connection to God, to other people, and even to your own soul.” Comer’s book, detailing his own journey, presents a compelling case in favor of a slower, simpler way of life. It’s an idea we’re embracing, and one we think you should definitely consider. Get your copy.

Get Out of Your Head

Jennie Allen

Our thought patterns are one of the key ways we’re often distracted from being present in the moment we’re actually living. Ever sat down for a family meal or coffee with a friend and you can’t fully engage with the moment because of all the thoughts swirling around your head? In Get Out of Your Head, a Christian book finalist, Jennie Allen encourages readers to take their thoughts captive and submit our minds to Christ. Get your copy.

Present: The Gift of Being All In, Right Where You Are

Courtney Ellis

Courtney Ellis recognizes the transient nature and rootlessness of our society (and sometimes our churches) and calls for believers to commit to the place and the people God has given them for that season. In Present, Ellis acknowledges the busyness of our lives, but also recognizes the deep longing for rootedness that permeates our society. This book is an invitation to stop holding the community God has placed in front of us at arms’ length and open our hearts to the blessing, grace and joy he has provided for us through that community.
