Spring 2023 Reading List: Growth & Renewal

Updated: May 22, 2023

We’re focused on growth and renewal for the next few months here at The Bookery—and as book lovers, that means we’re also adding a few books to our reading list that are designed to inspire both. Here are a few books we’ll be reading this spring.

By Bread Alone

Kendall Vanderslice

Kendall Vanderslice is the host of the “Kitchen Meditations” podcast and the founder of the Edible Theology Project, a ministry that connects the Communion table to the kitchen table. By Bread Alone is a memoir of sorts, weaving together Vanderslice’s own story with the theological role of bread throughout Scripture. In this season of Lent and beyond, we’ll be digging into Vanderslice’s book, believing that in telling her story, she’ll help us recognize important truths about our own.

Gentle and Lowly

Dane Ortlund

Truth be told, Dane Ortlund’s Gentle and Lowly has been on our reading list for awhile, but this season when we’re focusing on growth and renewal seems like the perfect time to focus on the heart of Christ. In this short, straightforward book, Ortlund invites us to remember how much Christ loves us and uses Scripture and the writings of Puritan writers to point us back to Jesus again and again.

Peace Like a River

Leif Enger

We can’t create a list that doesn’t include fiction! Peace Like a River is Leif Enger’s debut novel and follows the story of Reuben Land, who ends up on a cross-country search for his outlaw brother. It’s a beautiful novel, full of vivid descriptions and beautiful prose, that celebrates the human spirit and more than that, the extraordinary power of love and faith.

I Guess I Haven’t Learned that Yet

Shauna Niequist

During a season of loss and change, Shauna Niequist began to find that the practices that usually sustained her in moments like this were no longer working. She chronicles her journey in this book, detailing what it looks like to release our expectations of what we thought life would look like while learning to trust God in new, deeper ways.
