Songs from the Heart Day 46 Psalms 133 & 134

Read the Psalms

Psalm 133

Living in Harmony

A song of ascents. Of David.

1 How delightfully good

when brothers live together in harmony!

2 It is like fine oil on the head,

running down on the beard,

running down Aaron’s beard

onto his robes.

3 It is like the dew of Hermon

falling on the mountains of Zion.

For there the Lord has appointed the blessing—

life forevermore.

Psalm 134

Call to Evening Worship

A song of ascents.

1 Now bless the Lord,

all you servants of the Lord

who stand in the Lord’s house at night!

2 Lift up your hands in the holy place

and bless the Lord!

3 May the Lord,

Maker of heaven and earth,

bless you from Zion.

—Christian Standard Bible

Ponder Psalms 133 & 134

Read over the final two psalms of ascent, Psalms 133 and 134, then mull over what you’ve learned. Use the journal prompts below, if needed.

  • What do these psalms teach you about God’s character? About the psalmist’s posture toward or relationship with God?

  • Focus on Psalm 133. If you were trying to describe the emotion at work in this psalm or the way it makes you feel, what words, phrases or imagery would you use? Why?

  • Psalm 133 is a wisdom psalm, contrasting the happiness of the godly with the condemnation of the wicked. How have you seen godliness result in peace and harmony in your life, your family’s life or your church?

  • Sadly, many of us have faced disharmony within our churches. After such experiences, what was it like to experience harmony and unity with fellow believers? How did it refresh your soul or your faith?

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to examine your heart. Are you living to create harmony or discord among fellow believers?

  • What actions will you take this week to promote harmony in your family? At your job? Within your church?

  • Turn your attention to Psalm 134. In this psalm, the pilgrims traveling to the temple called for those working in the temple to praise the Lord. How can you encourage and support those who serve your church, even in unseen ways?

  • What in your life can you praise God for today? Be specific.

  • What are some practical ways you choose to cultivate a spirit of praise even when it’s hard or you don’t feel like it?

  • How can you help create an atmosphere of praise and worship in your church?

  • How have you experienced God’s blessing and provision this week? How will you praise him? How will you encourage fellow believers with your testimony?

  • Is worshiping and praising God a characteristic of your daily life or just something you do at church? Explain.

  • What actions will you take this week to nurture a lifestyle of praise in your daily activities and interactions?
