Read the Psalm
A Childlike Spirit
A song of ascents. Of David.
1 Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I do not get involved with things
too great or too wondrous for me.
2 Instead, I have calmed and quieted my soul
like a weaned child with its mother;
my soul is like a weaned child.
3 Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
both now and forever.

Ponder
Sit for a few minutes and think about what you’ve read. These journaling prompts can serve as a guide.
What does this psalm teach you about God’s character? About David’s posture toward or relationship with God?
If you had to pick a word or phrase to describe David’s attitude or state of mind in Psalm 131, what would it be? Why?
Consider verse 1. Thinking about Isaiah 55:9 in mind, how does this verse highlight the difference between us and God?
Ego, ambition, self-importance, thinking you have to know and understand everything God is doing—how are you concerning yourself with things too great or wondrous for you? Explain.
Reread verse 2. David described himself as completely resting in God like a weaned child. When have you experienced that kind of rest in the Lord? What did that experience teach you about yourself? About God?
Is there anything keeping you from experiencing that kind of rest today? What would it take for you to lay down anything that is keeping you from fully resting and trusting in God?
Psalm 131 was a song the Jews sang corporately as preparation for worship. How might this type of declaration change worship at your church or among your local body of believers?
Where’s your hope today? What steps will you take to place it in God alone?
