Savor Reading List: Summer 2024

Five books we’re delighting in this summer

We’re focusing on savoring our lives this summer. One thing we like to savor here at The Bookery is a good book. So while we’re focusing on finding delight in our everyday lives, here are a few books we’re hoping to read this year to help us do just that!

Savor: Living Abundantly Where You Are, As You Are

Shauna Niequist

Shauna Niequist’s 365-day devotional was one of our picks for our Winter 2024 reading list centered around perspective, but we’re also adding it to our summer reading list! This devotional encourages readers to savor each moment of their everyday lives, rather than getting mired in the “next big thing.” Our founder, Mandy Crow, is reading each day’s devotion as part of her nighttime routine. It’s helping to frame a perspective that every moment matters, she says, and encouraging her to push into the story she tells herself about who she is.

Embrace Your Life: How to Find Joy When the Life You Have is Not the Life You Hoped For

Elizabeth Woodson

If you’re honest with yourself, you probably don’t have to look very far to see the differences between the life you imagined you’d be living and the reality of your everyday life. There are likely longings and dreams in all of our lives that we’re still praying for God to fulfill. Some of us may have even seen the door close on a few of them. Elizabeth Woodson, a Bible teacher and the host of “Starting Place,” a podcast on the Training the Church network, meets those thoughts and feelings head-on in this book. Woodson uses Scripture to so us that even when life hasn’t turned out like we thought it would, we are capable of experiencing great joy, contentment and the delight of God’s unfailing presence in our lives.

An Unhurried Life: Following Jesus' Rhythms of Work and Rest

Alan Fadling

We live in a busy world where our value is also equated to our productivity. We seem to get as much accomplished as possible as quickly as we can. In An Unhurried Life, Alan Fadling encourages readers to stop taking their cues from society and focus on Jesus’ earthly life. Jesus didn’t hurry from one place to the next, and he didn’t let expectations or society drive what was most important to him. Fadling encourages readers to “unhurry,” showcasing this practice as central to resisting temptation, caring for others and more.

A Gentleman in Moscow

Amor Towles

A Gentleman in Moscow is an epic novel, spanning several decades of Count Alexander Rostov’s life in the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. An aristocrat, Rostov is confined to house arrest in the hotel following the Bolshevik revolution. The novel follows the Count’s daily life, detailing how he deals with the confinement, and how—despite all the reason he shouldn’t—he experiences hope and beauty.

Anne of Green Gables

L.M. Montgomery

Anne of Green Gables is a novel most of us probably read as children, detailing the adventures of Anne Shirley, a loveable, quirky red-headed orphan, as she finds her place in the home of Marilla and Matthew Cuthburt on Prince Edward Island. Sometimes, it’s rewarding to reread books you read as a child. This book is a delight, but it’s also fun to read it and see the events from a new perspective (i.e. you don’t put yourself in Anne’s shoes as a reader anymore but in those of Marilla and Matthew). If you’re looking to add a little delight in your life this summer, reread a novel you loved as a child or teenager. (And then tell us about it in the comments!)
