Lent Day 10: Demon-Possessed Man

Pause

Take a moment to simply rest in Jesus today. Confess your need for Him and thank Him for loving you at your most unlovable.

Read & Journal

Read Luke 4:31-37 in your Bible. Ponder these questions as you meditate on this passage:

  • What does this interaction with a demon-possessed man teach you about Jesus’ character? About His mission and purpose?

  • How do you see Jesus entering into brokenness in this passage?

  • This passage is a testimony of Jesus’ authority, even over demons. How have you seen His authority displayed in your life? In the lives of others?

Ponder

When your world spins out, it’s easy to believe that Jesus has no control. A global pandemic, job loss, grief, death, disappointment—it’s easy for us to look at everything that is wrong in the world and proclaim that it is out of control and there is nothing anyone can do about it, including Jesus. Yet in this passage, Jesus stands in another synagogue and with authority, orders demons to leave the man they have possessed. That man’s life was undoubtedly out-of-control. He was ostracized and lonely, likely wild with no power to make decisions about his own life. And in an instant, Jesus set the man free.

When we feel that our lives are out of control, that we have no power to change anything or make a difference, we need to remember who our Savior is. Jesus simply has to speak and demons listen. He is the ultimate authority and the ruler of our hearts—and in times of turmoil, we must let Him rule.
