Recipes to spice up your Cinco de Mayo celebrations

By The Bookery

It’s Cinco de Mayo, and maybe you’re looking for some tasty suggestions to liven up your celebration. We’ve got a few ideas!

But first, what is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo, which literally means “May 5,” celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War on May 5, 1862. Most sources agree Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, but has evolved into a larger celebration of Mexican culture and cuisine in the United States.

What are some authentic dishes to serve?

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mostly celebrated in Puebla, the region where the battle occurred. Hard shell ground beef tacos and margaritas usually aren’t on the menu, though! According to the Smithsonian Magazine, authentic dishes might include mole poblano and chalupas.

Whether you’re looking for more authentic dishes or some of your American favorites, here are a few recipes to spice up your Cinco de Mayo (or, you know, any night of the week)!

Guacamole

The best guacamole—in our opinion—involves a healthy dose of a delicious, fresh pico de gallo. We’re a fan of Ree Drummond’s pico and mix it with 3-4 avocados for a creamy dip.

Chalupas are a lot like tostadas and a delicious way to enjoy your favorite Mexican and Tex-Mex flavors. And you can speed up the process by using pre-made corn tortillas and adding your favorite toppings. Try this recipe.

Mexican Lasagna

Looking for all the tastes of Mexico but in casserole form? This is the recipe for you! Featuring rice, beans, enchilada sauce and more, this take on lasagna is sure to please.

Enchilada Casserole

Enchiladas are delicious, but if you’re short on time, all the rolling and filling can feel like a lot of work. Enter the enchilada casserole—with all the same ingredients, just stacked and layered rather than rolled! Try Gimme Some Oven’s recipe.

Desserts

Love churros but hate to deep fry? Here are a few dessert options to try:

Whether you whip up your Tex-Mex favorite at home or celebrate Cinco de Mayo at your favorite restaurant, enjoy!
